Remote access tools for MSPs

You have several options when it comes to RMM tools and PSA software, as you can see. An MSP may find it difficult to decide which ones to choose (and for which use cases).

For example, RDP is great for Windows computers connected to a local area network (LAN), but it isn't always supported. A viable alternative is Virtual Network Computing (VNC) employing a protocol like ICA, however it has cost trade-offs.

Naturally, MSPs are always concerned about scaling. For simple use cases and tiny LANs, one of the protocols might be all you need, but maintaining several accounts across multiple bespoke sites is a another matter entirely.
Security is one of the biggest problems MSPs face. While VNC is frequently routed over IPsec or SSH tunnels and RDP traffic is encrypted, it is not recommended to expose those services over the internet.

Tight policies must be implemented everywhere in order to use these protocols securely, including:

• secure passwords,

• Certifications,

• fire walls,

• MFA, or multi-factor authentication"

• changes in posture,

• Auditing and monitoring,

• Behavioural detection, as well as

• Micro tunnels.
They must all be defined, implemented, and enforced across several endpoints at multiple customer sites. Additionally, it greatly aids in implementing strict access policies and practices that are widely used nowadays in your organization, like:

• a zero-trust architecture,

• The least privileged access,

• timely access, and

• Conditional access.
